o Monday, July 23, 2007

A week-long event to promote investments along the East-West Economic Corridor is set to start in central Vietnam’s Da Nang on August 27

The corridor (EWEC) stretches 1,450km through Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar.

The EWEC week in the coastal city of Da Nang city is expected to attract 400 international participants including ministerial-level officials, heads of EWEC localities, and representatives of EWEC embassies in Hanoi.

The week includes a forum to promote investment, trade and tourism in the region, and an EWEC trade fair.

A caravan tour along the EWEC is set to depart from the coastal city to Mukdahan province, Thailand.

The EWEC is an economic development program initiated in 1998 by the Ministerial Conference of Greater Sub-Mekong Region organized in Manila to promote development and integration of the four countries, namely: Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

The countries are working on completing a trans-national road along the corridor to connect with major cities like Yangon, Dawei, Chiang Mai, Bangkok via north-south roads like Laos’ Road 13 Vietnam’s National Highway 1A.

The development of the economic corridor aims to further strengthen economic cooperation and facilitate trade, investment and tourism between the four countries, while reducing transport costs.
