Tran Quoc An - Plates of The Stars

o Thursday, February 21, 2008

Noted calligrapher Tran Quoc An hopes his 100 porcelain plate caricatures of local and foreign celebrities will earn him another Vietnamese record.

Born in 1961 in the central-southern beach city of Nha Trang, Tran Quoc An’s Calligraphy has already given him two spots in Vietbooks, the national record book.

His calligraphic rendering of Ho Chi Minh’s poetry collection Nhat Ky Trong Tu (Prison Diary) holds the record for largest piece calligraphy, weighing in at 40 kilograms.

When it was released in 2003, An’s Nhat Ky Trong Tu won the Ho Chi Minh City Book Association’s Original Book Prize as well the Essence of Vietnam award at the 2003 Festival Hue.

In 2005, he wrote Vietnam’s longest ever parallel sentences (2.4 m x 30 m), which were written to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the US-led war’s end.

His latest artistic endeavor is a collection of 100 porcelain caricatures including local singers My Linh, Dam Vinh Hung, Hong Nhung, as well as several Vietnamese singers living abroad – Tuan Ngoc, Khanh Ha and Khanh Ly.

Actor Nguyen Chanh Tin and musician Tran Van Khe are also included.

World-renowned celebrities such as David Beckham, Marilyn Monroe, Rowan Atkinson and Charlie Chaplin appear in the collection.

“Caricatures here should not be confused with satirical or critical ones,” says An.

“My work simply brings laughter and looks at things from a different angle.” He says he hopes his works brings the celebrities and their fans closer together.

An has give each local celebrity he depicted a plate of their own.

When asked why he made 100 plates, An said that was the perfect number to establish the record for largest collection of porcelain plates with caricatures on them.

An hopes that the record bookkeepers will take notice soon.

“My big dream is to establish five records in my lifetime. I am happy with my accomplishments so far and I will keep the momentum going.”

After the success of the celebrity cartoon plate collection, An and his wife, Ton Nu Minh Nhon, say they have “bigger plans” for the future.

But he said he wouldn’t let us know what the project was until he finished it.

An’s wife originally had the idea for the caricatures in 2006.

She is credited with always playing an important role in her spouse’s success.

An and his wife have traveled across Vietnam to collect the autograph of each person caricatured.

An is currently on the lookout for a sponsor to put him through Festival Hue 2008’s caricature cartoon exhibition in this June.

Those living in Ho Chi Minh City have the chance to enjoy his collection on March 9th at venue Saigon Center (65 Le Loi Blvd., Dist. 1).
